Aceton is een vluchtig ketonoplosmiddel. Het wordt gebruikt in coatings, lijmen, reiniging en extractie. Het dient ook als chemisch tussenproduct voor methylmethacrylaat en bisfenol A. Andere toepassingen zijn onder meer nagellakverwijderaars en organische synthese. Het materiaal is een heldere, kleurloze vloeistof. Cosmetisch gebruik is onderworpen aan de voor het ingrediënt geldende cosmeticavoorwaarden.
