Monoethanolamine is zowel een primair amine als een primaire alcohol. Het is een alkanolamine dat wordt gebruikt als pH-regulator, zuurgaswasmiddel, tussenproduct voor detergentia en oppervlakteactieve stoffen en neutralisatiemiddel. Het wordt ook gebruikt als wegvanger voor CO2 en H2S in aardgas. Het is een heldere kleurloze tot lichtgele stroperige vloeistof.
