Diethylftalaat is de diethylester van benzeen-1,2-dicarbonzuur. Het wordt gebruikt als weekmaker voor celluloseacetaat en celluloid. Het wordt ook gebruikt als oplosmiddel voor vernissen en dopes, als geurdrager en fixeermiddel, en bij het denatureren van alcohol. Het dient ook als drager voor cosmetische ingrediënten. Cosmetisch gebruik is onderworpen aan de voor het ingrediënt geldende cosmeticavoorwaarden.
