Benzisothiazolinone, or BIT, is an isothiazolinone preservative and industrial biocide. It is used for in-can protection of water-based paints, polymer emulsions, adhesives and detergents against bacterial and fungal spoilage. Other applications include preserving printing inks, cleaning agents, pastes and metalworking fluids. It also serves as a slimicide in vinyl-glove manufacturing. The technical material can take the form of a crystalline powder or paste, and liquid dispersions are also described. Use in biocidal products depends on the applicable product authorisation.
