Calcium is a silvery, soft metal that turns greyish white on exposure to air. In metallurgy it is used as a deoxidiser for copper, beryllium and steel, to harden lead for bearings and as an alloying agent for aluminium, copper and lead. It is also used as an industrial catalyst for polyester fibres.
