Chloroform, also called trichloromethane, is a volatile chlorinated solvent and a member of the chloromethanes. Its molecule is derived from methane, with three hydrogen atoms replaced by chlorine atoms. It is used as an extraction solvent and laboratory reagent, and as a solvent for resins, plasticisers and rubber chemicals. Other applications include use as a chemical intermediate. It is a clear, colourless liquid with a characteristic odour.
