Formaldehyde (methanal) is a colourless gas at room temperature. Its aqueous solutions are colourless liquids with a pungent odour. It is used predominantly as a chemical intermediate. It is used in the production of formaldehyde resins, plywood, particle board, paper and urea-formaldehyde foam. Minor uses include concrete and plaster additives and analytical reagents. Use in biocidal products depends on the applicable product authorisation.
