Isopentane (2-methylbutane) is an alkane: butane substituted by a methyl group at position 2. It is a colourless, volatile liquid with a pleasant, gasoline-like odour. It is used as a chemical intermediate, a solvent, a blowing agent for polystyrene and a gasoline additive.
