Tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium sulfate, or THPS, is a biocide used as a slimicide in papermaking. It also acts as a preservative in leather tanning and a microbicide in oilfield water-injection systems. Other recorded applications include crease-resistant and flame-retardant textile finishes. Commercial aqueous solutions are clear, colourless to pale-yellow liquids. The catalogue lists a technical grade in 200 kg steel drums, 1000 kg IBCs and ISO tanks. Use in biocidal products depends on the applicable product authorisation.
