Benzalkoniumchloride is een alkyldimethylbenzylammoniumverbinding en een kationische oppervlakteactieve stof. Het dient als breedspectrumbiocide en desinfectiemiddel in hygiëne- en desinfectieformuleringen. Daarnaast werkt het als conserveermiddel in producten voor persoonlijke verzorging. Het is een heldere, kleurloze tot lichtgele, viskeuze vloeistof. Cosmetisch gebruik is onderworpen aan de voor het ingrediënt geldende cosmeticavoorwaarden. Gebruik in biociden is afhankelijk van de toepasselijke producttoelating.
