Crystal violet is the monochloride salt of the crystal violet cation. It occurs as a dark green powder or as greenish, glistening pieces with a metallic lustre. It is used as a dye for wood, silk and paper, in inks and as a biological stain. It is also used for making stamping and hectographic inks.
