Certain varieties are used as pigments for ceramics, paint, rubber, paper and linoleum and for rouge and in plastics as a colouring pigment. It also gives lightfast, weather-stable red-brown colour in concrete, mortar, paints and plastics. It is a red-brown crystalline powder. Recorded grades include natural, technical, micronized. Cosmetic use is subject to the applicable cosmetic-ingredient conditions.
